Should You Just Stain Your Concrete Floor Yourself?

It is always best to have a professional do your concrete floor staining. Why? Well, there are many reasons. One is for safety. Acid based stains in particular can be dangerous to work with. No fumes can be inhaled and protective gear must be worn, including specialized masks. Highland Meadows is trained, experienced, and equipped to handle all types of concrete floor staining.

In addition to safety concerns, it's always better to use a pro simply because your home is one of your biggest and most important investments. We are often called to come in and repair mistakes that were made by DIY homeowners or less qualified companies who ruined the floor. Unfortunately, to repair such a project often costs more than if we had just done the job to begin with, correct from the beginning. A lot of work is involved in stripping off the sealer and trying to undo the damage. Sometimes it simply isn't possible. Once the stain is down, it is considered permanent! This is why the Concrete Network says on their website that homeowners should “hire the services of an expert, especially if the slab is large, requires surface preparation, or you want to incorporate multiple colors or decorative effects.”

When applying concrete floor stain, it is important to understand all aspects of the project from the preparation of the surface to the final sealing and curing. The condition of your concrete must be thoroughly evaluated by someone experienced. Is it not level or uneven? Are there spots of grease or paint? Nail holes? If so, a layer of floating concrete might need to be added so that your floor will take the stain, and will have desirable results.

In addition to training, experience and knowledge, the correct tools are important as well. Acid based stains in particular require acid resistant brushes. Both types of stain require spray equipment. Rollers should only be used by the most experienced applicators because otherwise they tend to leave roller marks or they can streak the color.

Why take a chance when it comes to something so permanent that involves your home? We have been doing this for over 15 years and have the expertise and equipment to create a beautiful stained concrete floor in your residential home.
